Packing Station Functionality
Packing Station (PS) is a parameter-driven module within Enterprise. There are many different set up combinations which produce very different results. This topic will attempt to describe the most common functionality in Packing Station. For further information, see Troubleshooting Carton Details.
- In Packing Entry (PS30), if a Product is on a Sales Order multiple times (i.e. on more than one Sales Order line) or is on multiple Sales Orders, the system is designed to ripple through the Sales Order(s) and automatically update the Pack Quantity for the Product. Specifically, the Pack Quantity is distributed in the following order:
- Shippable values.
- Back Order values.
- Over pack values.
Note: The unpacking of Sales Orders follows the reverse order i.e. Over pack values, then BO values and finally Shippable values.
- When the 'Auto PS30 Update' flag is selected for a Product or Supplier/Product record in Maintain Inventory Master (IM13) or in Maintain Purchasing Info (PO13), and that Product's GTIN or Supplier Product Code is entered in PS30 with:
- the Quantity Entry Method set to 'Auto', and
- the Item Entry Method is Universal, Sales Order Line/Universal or any GTIN code
The Pack Quantity in PS30 updates by the SKU Quantity for the GTIN. The SKU weights and measurements for the GTIN automatically update the Carton and display in the grid.
Note: With Carton Control set to Multi Order–Auto, when you are scanning products with GTINs that have a SKU quantity greater than one, a single scan will fill order lines across multiple Sales Orders (that contain the product associated with the GTIN) beginning with the oldest Sales Order. For example, you have 4 Sales Orders that include product 123 (SKU quantity = 5):
- Order Date Nov. 30/08 – Order No. 100127 includes a B/O for product 123 with a b/o qty of 3
- Order Date Nov. 30/08 – Order No. 100130 includes a B/O for product 123 with a b/o qty of 2
- Order Date Nov. 30/08 - Order No. 100123 includes product 123 with an order qty of 1
- Order Date Dec. 02/08 – Order No. 100136 includes product 123 with an order qty of 4
When you scan the product 123 for the first time, Sales Orders 100127 (b/o qty 3) and 100130 (b/o qty 2) will be added to the pack. When you scan product 123 the second time, Sales Orders 100123 (qty 1) and Sales Order 100136 (qty 4) will be added to the pack.
- When Packing a Product, there is a case where the system will return a message noting that the Pack Qty cannot be more than the Order Qty. This will occur when the Item Entry Method is set to 'Auto' and the SKU quantity of the GTIN or Supplier Product code is used to update the Pack Quantity.
- If the total Order Quantity on the Sales Order is less than the SKU quantity, you cannot pack the Product when the Over Shipment field is set to 'Not Allowed' in CC00/Packing Station.
- For example, a Sales Order has a Pack Quantity of 19 for a Product. You select a GTIN that has a SKU quantity of 20; the following message displays: "The Pack Quantity of 20 cannot be more than the outstanding order quantity of 19. Overshipping is not allowed. OK". You cannot pack the Product using the selected GTIN. You will need to change the Quantity Entry Method to 'Prompt' or select another Item Entry Method
.
Note: The reverse is also true: If you are using a GTIN or Supplier Product Code for unpacking, and the SKU quantity is greater than the pack quantity for the product, the following message displays: "Unpack quantity cannot be more than the total quantity packed for this item. OK". You must either change the Quantity Entry Method to Prompt or select another Item Entry Method.
- Products flagged as 'Auto PS30 Update' in IM13 or PO13 are considered to be 'Standard Ship Packs'. When a Standard Ship Pack is packed in PS30 with the Quantity Entry Method set to 'Auto', the Carton ID field is automatically cleared so the next item packed must be packed into a new Carton or the same Carton ID must be manually selected from the Carton ID query. The reason behind this functionality stems from the fact that Standard Ship Packs are often packed on their own. Enterprise will not stop you from packing other Products with a Standard Ship Pack, but the system is designed to make you manually chose the Carton ID for which you are packing additional items.
Note: The Packer must scan the GTIN code or Supplier Product Code flagged as 'Auto PS30 Update' in IM13 or PO13.
- When the 'GTIN Auto Update Lock' is selected as a parameter for the Packer Id in Maintain Packing Station Tables (PS09/Packer Identifications) and the GTIN or Supplier Product Code entered in PS30/Carton Details is flagged as 'Auto PS30 Update' in IM13 or PO13, a password will be required in PS30 when the following conditions are met:
- When the Item Entry Method (PS30) is:
- Any of the GTIN types (if a GTIN code is entered).
- Supplier Product Code If a Supplier Product Code is entered).
- Universal.
- Sales Order Line/Universal.
AND you are packing:
- A GTIN flagged as 'Auto PS30 Update' and another Product.
- A GTIN flagged as 'Auto PS30 Update' plus another GTIN flagged as 'Auto PS30 Update'.
- A Product and a GTIN flagged as 'Auto PS30 Update'.
- Manually recalling a GTIN flagged as 'Auto PS30 Update' from the list box and reducing OR increasing the Pack Quantity.
- You cannot pack Sales Orders for a Warehouse designated as a Multi-Bin Warehouse in Company Control Initialization (CC00/Multi-Bin Warehouse Control) with a Single-Bin Warehouse in Packing Station when the following parameters are set in CC00/Packing Station:
- Carton Control is set to 'Multi-Order Auto'
AND
- Over Shipments is set to 'Add to Existing Order Line' or 'Create New Order Line'
Note: Over packing is never allowed in a Multi-Bin Warehouse environment. As a result, Sales Orders from Multi-Bin Warehouses cannot be packed with Sales Orders from Single-Bin Warehouses because you do not have to manually select a Sales Order when CC00/Packing Station is set up with these parameters.
-
The 'Split Case and Inner' logic that is defined in CC00/Order Entry is not utilized by Packing Station. When the 'Split Case and Inner' flag is selected in CC00/Order Entry and the Sales Order has an Order Quantity greater than the SKU quantity, Order Entry splits the quantity over 2 lines on the Sales Order. Packing Station packs the entire Order Quantity on one line.
This section describes the effect the different combinations of 'Carton Control' and 'Over Shipments' (set up in CC00/Packing Station) have on Packing Station:
- Carton Control is set to 'Single Order', and
- Over Shipments is set to 'Not Allowed'
Only one Sales Order may be packed into a Carton and over shipping is not allowed. A Sales Order and Carton must be selected to pack the Order. Products that are not already on the Sales Order cannot be added AND you cannot pack Products on the Order past the Ordered Quantity.
- Over Shipments is set to 'Add to Existing Order Line'
Only one Sales Order may be packed into a Carton and over shipping existing Products on the Order results in an addition to the Pack Quantity on the existing line while Products that do not already exist on the Order are added as 'A' lines. A Sales Order and Carton must be selected to pack the Order.
- Over Shipments is set to 'Create New Order Line'
Only one Sales Order may be packed into a Carton and over shipping Products on the Order result in an 'A' line whether the over shipment is for an existing Product on the Order or for a Product that does not exist on the Order. A Sales Order and Carton must be selected to pack the Order.
- Carton Control is set to 'Multi Order-Prompt', and
- Over Shipments is set to 'Not Allowed'
Multiple Sales Orders may be packed into a Carton and over shipping is not allowed. A Sales Order and Carton must be selected to pack the Order. Products that are not already on the Sales Order cannot be added AND you cannot pack Products on the Order past the Ordered Quantity.
- Over Shipments is set to 'Add to Existing Order Line'
Multiple Sales Orders may be packed into a Carton and over shipping existing Products on the Order results in an addition to the Pack Quantity on the existing line while Products that do not already exist on the Order are added as 'A' lines. A Sales Order and Carton must be selected to pack the Order. Over shipments only apply to the Sales Order and Carton ID selected.
- Over Shipments is set to 'Create New Order Line'
Multiple Sales Order may be packed into a Carton and over shipping Products on the Order result in an 'A' line whether the over shipment is for an existing Product on the Order or for a Product that does not exist on the Order. A Sales Order and Carton must be selected to pack the Order. Over shipments only apply to the selected Sales Order and Carton ID selected.
- Carton Control is set to 'Multi Order-Auto', and
Note:
When using this method, and there are multiple Sales Orders entered in the Pack, you have no control over which Sales Order the Product is being packed from. Packing Station ripples through all of the Sales Orders and finds the Product being packed. The shippable lines are updated first, then back ordered lines are filled and finally over shipments are filled.
- Over Shipments is set to 'Not Allowed'
Multiple Sales Orders may be packed into a Carton and over shipping is not allowed. Only a Carton ID must be selected in order to pack Sales Orders (i.e. the Sales Order field can be left blank if the Sales Order numbers for this Pack have been already been keyed in). Products that are not already on the Sales Order cannot be added AND you cannot pack Products on the Order past the Ordered Quantity.
- Over Shipments is set to 'Add to Existing Order Line'
Multiple Sales Orders may be packed into a Carton and over shipping existing Products on the Order results in an addition to the Pack Quantity on the existing line of the latest Order while Products that do not already exist on the Order are added as 'A' lines to the latest Order. Only a Carton ID must be selected to pack the Sales Order(s). Over Shipments only apply to the selected Carton ID.
- Over Shipments is set to 'Create New Order Line'
Multiple Sales Order may be packed into a Carton and over shipping Products on the Order result in an 'A' line whether the over shipment is for an existing Product on the Order or for a Product that does not exist on the Order. The 'A' line is added to the latest Order. Only a Carton must be selected to pack the Sales Order(s). Over Shipments apply to the selected carton only.
