IM29 - Comparison of Models & Assembled Sets

A significant difference between a Model and an Assembled Set is how stock is controlled. Because Models can specify optional components, it is never expected for them to be stocked pre-assembled; they should never have an On Hand quantity. Purchase orders are placed for the components; sales orders commit/relieve/backorder against the components.

An Assembled Set is allowed to be stocked pre-assembled (pre-packed) because the list of components is fixed; all components are mandatory. Purchase orders can be placed for the Assembled Set and sales orders can be directed to relieve stock for the Assembled Set –OR- the components can be purchased and sales orders can be directed to commit/relieve stock for the component products. However, backorders are always recorded against the Assembled Set product which complicates repurchasing if you always ship from components.

The following chart outlines some of the differences/features between a Model product and an Assembled Set product:
