Menu Functions (EC08)

Additional Information
Advanced Attributes

The Menu Functions (EC08) program allows you to create and access a collection of web applets known as Menu Functions.

  • A Menu Function can use a display name or an image file in the generated HTML.

  • Security and navigation concerns are addressed by grouping Menu Functions into Menu Systems (see Menu Systems (EC09) for more details).

Note: Most menu functions are initially created by TECSYS staff and should be modified only after receiving advice from TECSYS staff.

The following list defines every field on EC08:

  • EC Function - enter or select from the query a Menu Function. You can enter a maximum of 32 alpha numeric characters into this field.

  • Description - enter a Description for the Menu Function. You can enter a maximum of 64 alpha numeric characters in this field.

  • Active - select this check box to make the current menu function available for use on the web site. When this check box is not selected, the menu function is not available for use on the web site.

  • Display When Public - when this check box is selected, the menu function is visible in 'public' mode, i.e. the menu function is available to all users. For example, the "Login" menu function is available on the following public menu bar:

  • Display When Private - when this check box is selected, the menu function is only available visible to users who are logged into the web site. Following our example, once a user logs into the e-Commerce web site, the menu bar now displays a "Logoff" menu function in place of the "Login" menu function. The "Logoff" function is flagged to 'Display When Private' (while the "Login" function is flagged to 'Display When Public').

  • Function Type - this field is created by TECSYS staff and should be maintained by TECSYS staff only. There are two valid options available from the drop down list:

    • HRef - the function is a hyperlink.

    • Code - the function is a piece of HTML or ProvideX code.

  • Function Value - this field is created by TECSYS staff and should be maintained by TECSYS staff only. This field is designed to allow entry of an appropriate Value depending on the function type. For example:

    • If the Function Type is HRef, then enter a hyperlink destination.

    • If the Function Type is Code, then enter HTML or ProvideX code.

  • Page - this field is created by TECSYS staff and should be maintained by TECSYS staff only.

  • Use Default CSS - select this check box to use the default Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) for the current menu function. A CSS defines the style of the page. The default CSS displays in the 'Default CSS Value' field. If you do not select this check box, then you must select a value from the drop list in the 'CSS HTML Object' field.

  • Default CSS - this field is used in conjunction with the 'Use Default CSS' check box. If this check box is selected, then enter the Default CSS into this field.

  • CSS HTML Object - this field is used when the 'Use Default CSS' field is not selected. From the drop down list, select a 'CSS' HTML Object. CSS HTML Objects are maintained in HTML Objects. The drop list is populated with HTML Objects that have a 'Class' of CSS.

  • Description HTML Object - this field is currently reserved for future use.

  • Help HTML Object - this field is currently reserved for future use.

  • Language - enter or select from the query a language code. Languages are maintained in Maintain Company Languages (CC17). The language field determines the language in which the menu function is to be published.

    • You must create an HTML Object in the company's Primary language before any alternate records can be created.

  • Active (Language) - select this check box to make the menu function, in the current language, available for use on the web site. For example, you can have an English function available for the web, but the French version is unavailable during translation.

  • Translate - this is a memo only field for database maintenance and/or conversion purposes. This field is to be used by Tecsys staff or database administrators only.

    • If you select the Translate check box, the following message displays: "Do you wish to mark this record as inactive while it requires translation? Yes/No". If you select Yes, then the Active (Language) check box is cleared.

  • Display Name - enter a name for the menu function that displays on the web site. This is an optional field. You can enter a maximum of 64 alpha numeric characters in this field.

  • The Image 1 section allows the image information entered to be displayed on the web page for this language record for the current menu function.

    • Image Source - the Image Source field is where you specify the image file. The images are typically stored in the "Images/Menu" directory of your web page root directory.

      • You can use the Find button to browse to the "Images/Menu" directory in order to find an image file. You can create sub-directories below the 'Menu' directory, but you can only browse the specific path listed here. The system expects image files for your e-Commerce website to be stored in the "Images/Menu" directory. Note: In a Windows environment, an example of the root directory is E:\0\your customer code\Client\www\Images\Menu; an example from a Unix/Linux environment is /0/your customer code/Client/www/Images/Menu.

      • You can also use the View button to view the image selected using the Windows image viewer associated with the file extension at the end of the Image file.

    • Pixel Height - you must specify the height for the menu system image in pixels in order for the image to display on your web page. You can determine the dimensions of an image from the software that you use to view the image; for example, with the image file open in the software, select the 'Image Properties' or 'Image Information' option from one of the menus.

    • Pixel Width - you must specify the width for the menu system image in pixels in order for the image to display on your web page. You can determine the dimensions of an image from the software that you use to view the image; for example, with the image file open in the software, select the 'Image Properties' or 'Image Information' option from one of the menus.

    • Size in Bytes - you can specify the size of the image in bytes in order for the image to display properly on your web page. You can determine the size in bytes of an image from the software that you use to view the image; for example, with the image file open in the software, select the 'Image Properties' or 'Image Information' option from one of the menus.

    • HTML Alt Tag - enter an alternate HTML name for the graphic. The HTML Alt Tag can be a maximum of 32 alpha numeric characters in length. The alternate tag is used in the place of the graphic if the browser cannot display the image.

  • The Image 2 section allows the image information entered in this section to be displayed when the user does a 'mouse-over' of the image entered in the Image 1 section. For example, the Image 1 image displays a "button" and the Image 2 image displays an image that appears to be a depressed button.

  • List Box - displays all of the language records that exist for the current menu function.
